What's Driving You?

What's Driving you?

We need have no fear of someone who loves us perfectly; His perfect love for us eliminates all dread of what He might do to us. If we are afraid, it is for fear of what He might do to us and shows that we are not fully convinced that He really loves us. 1 John 4:18,TLB

What’s driving you? Fear or love?

I have an irrational fear of spiders, thanks to my overactive imagination, no doubt. As much as I try to talk myself out of it, one sighting would send me spiralling! There are many instances in the Bible where God tells His people not to be afraid – do not fear, do not worry, be anxious for nothing!

I remember coming across 1 John 4:18 and upon introspection the thought hit me – perfect love casts out all fear – there is no fear in love. Fear often sends us reeling in the opposite direction, but love draws us in. It was the love of the Father that brought the Prodigal Son home. Fear sent Adam and Eve hiding after they sinned, but it was the love of God that sought after them in the garden.

Fear can make us do some crazy things, but love is gentle and patient. Fear causes us to build walls – generational, cultural, racial, familial, you name it! Love tears these walls down.

“What is driving the decisions you make?” is a question I often ask myself. When this world was plunged into darkness, “God loved us past fear and sent His Son.” “God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him. This is real love – not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” – 1 John 4:9, 10.

As I celebrate another year around the Sun, I pray that He will help me to overcome my fears and move forward in love, His love. That He takes the wheel of what’s driving me, and we leave fear at the curb on the journey.

“Make your decisions out of love rather than fear. It is love that will free you with light. It is fear that will strangle you with darkness.” – The Better Man Project

“Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we learn. The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear and prejudices and the acceptance of love back into our hearts. Love is the essential reality and our purpose on earth.” - Marianne Williamson

“Fear is a self-imposed prison that will keep you from becoming what God intends for you to be. You must move against it with the weapons of faith and love.” - Rick Warren

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for love. Without it, this world would be full of darkness. Even in the moments where we feel love is gone, we still see glimpses of Your love shining through in Your creation. Your love is a force that will not give up and will not be overcome by fear. Help us to remember this – to remember that You tell us not to worry and not to fear. May what’s driving us be love. In Jesus name, Amen.

Be blessed to be a blessing.
