The God Who Sees Me

Where You Are - Illustration

The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob and my God; the covenant-keeping God who preserves and provides; the God who cares and connects Himself to my needs.  It may seem long to me sometimes, so reassure me of Your divine help. Exodus 3:6 (Personalized)

It’s quite easy to feel insignificant with over 8 billion people in the world! We appear as the stars in the night sky, dots existing for a time and then to slumber. Social media has shown us that with all the hustle and bustle around us, persons constantly texting or seeking our attention, we can still feel lonely and unseen at times. Connection whilst now at our fingertips is not enough to connect us in a way that truly matters.

What a tragedy it would be for any person to enter this world and leave it without knowing they are seen and loved; to feel they are alone even though surrounded by loved ones.

In Genesis 16:13, Hagar, Sarai’s slave and expectant mother, gives this name to God who visited her in her distress – El Roi. It means “the God who sees me.” David in Psalms 139 praises God for knowing us intimately. In verses 13 to 16, he says, “For You created my inmost being, You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful; I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

What resonated with me as I wrote this devotion for today is that God met both Hagar and the Samaritan woman at the well – at a time when they were pondering their situation. He acknowledged both and offered a way out. It shows me how attentive God is to us no matter our circumstance.

I recall being afraid to be seen by God – who would want to be by a harsh taskmaster judge. As I began to experience a relationship with God for myself, I remember when I first felt truly seen by Him – it was when He answered my prayer and as only He could. I pray that those of you who are going through the motions may feel seen by Him too. God knows the number of hairs on our head (Luke 12:7), and he keeps a record of each tear we’ve ever cried (Psalm 56:8). Does God keep a record because He will forget? I highly doubt it. The record seems to be for our benefit so we will see how detailed God was with us as individuals. As I re-read my journal entries, it blesses me to see how far God has led me and the prayers He’s answered for me.

“Mental note: You are seen. God sees our brokenness and gives it meaning. He sees our pain and gives it purpose. He sees our wait and gives it reason. And He sees our future and gives it promise.” – Unknown.

“I have heard your prayers; I have seen your tears. I will heal you.” 2 Kings 20:5

“He sees us on those blah days when all we feel is numbness. He might not instantly fix every predicament we encounter, but we never have to doubt His presence. We are never alone because El Roi is the God who sees.” - Melissa Spoelstra

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being my El Roi – the God who sees. In whatever situation I may find myself – good and bad, I know that You are with me. Help my faith to kick in where I cannot trace You. In those moments where I struggle, may I cling to You even more. Help me to recognize Your voice and Your leading - in moments of distress and anxiety, when I am on the wrong path! When I can’t see a way out, in every season of life. In Jesus name, Amen.

“I want you to live in confidence that when God looks at you, He sees beauty, He see value, He sees hope. And that even when you’re hiding, or when you’re so beaten down you can’t see anything clearly, He’s still hard at work, crafting a beautiful future of relationship with Him and with others. - Tammy Maltby

“I have now seen the One who sees me.” - Hagar

Be blessed to be a blessing.
