Spared

Where You Are - Illustration

If God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for me – Along with His Son, I am trusting Him for family and friends, for food and shelter, for health and healing, for love in my relationships, for peace in my home and for eternal life. Romans 8:32 (Personalized)

The word spare can be defined as “to refrain from harming or destroying; leave uninjured; forbear to punish, hurt, or destroy: to spare one’s enemy.” (Dictionary.com).

When I think about John 3:16, God did not spare His own Son so that humanity, me and you, could be spared.

Have you ever loved someone that you went through pain to spare them from it? How many countless parents have put themselves in harm’s way to protect their children from falling or being hurt. How many still would and have given their life in place of another.

The world is abuzz with Christmas. Depending on who you ask you will get a different response.

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”

“It’s a pagan holiday.”

“I don’t celebrate or acknowledge it.”

No matter where you fall on the holiday spectrum, the world was given a gift in the person of Jesus Christ. The story of earth’s salvation is etched in time and written even in the stars. The sky that was alight with a host of angels singing still shows the praises of His existence.

We can choose to argue about dates, or we can choose to remember the purpose for which He came. It’s easy to see God as an exacting judge, it helps us to feel less guilty when we disconnect and disassociate from Him because He is too difficult to please.

Contrasting this though, is an all-powerful God, powerless to force us to choose Him because of free will. The plan? To redeem mankind back to Himself – no matter the cost.  The cost? His only begotten Son. As we look to soon share gifts and well wishes with friends and family, let’s remember the greatest gift of all. Jesus was not spared so we could be spared.

“Here’s the paradox. We can fully embrace God’s love only when we recognize how completely unworthy of it we are.” – Ann Tatlock

“God can’t give us peace and happiness apart from Himself because there is no such thing.” - C.S. Lewis

“Legalism says God will love us if we change. The gospel says God will change us because He loves us.” – Tullian Tchividjian

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2:4-5

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to take our place. You did not spare Him so we could be spared from eternal damnation. We thank You and we praise You and we bless Your name. Your love, mercy and compassion are etched in every one of us. Help us to accept the gift of salvation. In Jesus name, Amen.

“Jesus is moved to happiness every time He sees that you appreciate what He has done for you.” - Ole Hallesby

Do you not realize that the love the Father bestowed on the perfect Christ He now bestows on you? Charles Spurgeon
