A Seat at the Table

Where You Are - Illustration

You honour me and set me apart. You give me a plentiful portion. It is more than I need. You serve me in front of my enemies. They are baffled for they cannot prevent it. Psalm 23:5 (Personalized)

A seat at the table generally occurs when a person is recognized as a valuable contributor to a group or organization.

A seat at God’s table looks like when His presence is among you. It looks like living in answered prayer, feasting on the goodness of God.

To be in those moments of deliverance where you know in your heart that God brought You as only He could. It looks like being at a place where you don’t fight to fit in, but you know you belong.

I love the Book of Psalms. I envision David in Psalm 23 looking back over the years to how God walked with him. The relationship they shared as being good Shepherds; the many battles he fought and won with God at His side. The moments of despair (shadow of valley of death) he experienced to where He talks about being honoured and set apart in the presence of His enemies.

There are many instances where Jesus showed and taught the importance of humility. When the disciples argued about who was the greatest among them (Luke 22:24-30) He told them that was not the way in which heaven operates.

In my experience, it’s far better for God to bestow honour on us than for us to seek it of ourselves or from man. Oftentimes we strive and fight and quarrel for places we need not be in. Spaces not designed by God for us. The amount of heartache and bitterness that could be avoided if we would put love of power and pride aside and let the Holy Spirit guide us into areas we are to occupy.

Paul says this about Jesus, our example in Philippians 2:7-10 (ESV – Easy to read version) Instead, he gave up everything, even his place with God. He accepted the role of a servant, appearing in human form. During his life as a man, 8 he humbled himself by being fully obedient to God, even when that caused his death—death on a cross. 9 So God raised him up to the most important place and gave him the name that is greater than any other name. 10 God did this so that every person will bow down to honour the name of Jesus. Everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth will bow.

As I write this devotion, I thank God for giving me a seat at the table. I thank Him for the open and closed doors and showering me with His blessings.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to show me what humility looks like. Help me to wait on You with a humble and contrite spirit. Thank You for the honour and unmerited favour You show me. Thank You for a seat at the table where my cup is filled and overflowing. In Jesus name, Amen.
